Mobi - Concept design for Whirlpool’s outdoor refrigerator
How can Whirlpool design an innovative concept that not just builds the brand’s image but also create an outdoor refrigerator market ?
Opportunity
Whirlpool wanted to capture the needs of a high-end affluent Indian consumers who live in massive houses and often host small parties in their backyards. A refrigerator that is small and portable and could convert in to a snack stall in an instance. Through such a radical product design, Whirlpool’s also wanted to build and strengthen its brand image as a leader for refrigeration in India.
India is a nation that is crazy about the game of ‘cricket’ and the regular tournament games are watched by the millions on TV. Whilrpool saw an opportunity to showcase the product during the game’s half time, instead of the regular snack stall that is rolled into thefield to serve drinks and refreshments to the players.
Solution
Global Consumer Design team at Whirlpool planned to come up with a refrigerator concept that can be easily pushed out into a garden/terrace/any open space available in the massive household real estate of an affluent Indian. The design should appeal to an affluent Indian consumer who would buy it as a second refrigerator to host a small group of people outdoors with some light snacks and drinks.

Concept Design
The design direction was to have refrigerated as well as non-refrigerated compartments in the product. The side flaps could house the glasses while the main central compartment could house the drinks and refreshments.
