Design a packaging solution for Gatorade that reflects the brand’s ‘Performance’ proposition

Gatorade Sports Drink Bottle Design

In 2009, PepsiCo India reached out to the famous Desmania Design Studio to craft a radical sipper bottle that reflects the product’s core value proposition ‘performance’. Although I was heading the Action Figure design studio at the consultancy, I was considered as the apt designer who could conceptualise and bring in the ‘energy/performance’ elements into the product. I was assigned as a lead of the project - responsible to conceptualise, 3D model, render, prototype and supervise the engineering team to bring out the undiluted intent of the original design.

The product was later sold in the Indian market in 2010 as a complimentary equipment (sipper bottle) along with the drink.

MInd Map & Mood Board

Kicked-off the project by creating a mind map of the hard and soft feature explorations of the product. Later, created a mood board to understand Gatorade’s existing design language and other available sipper bottles in the market.

Based on the mid map and mood board, created a number of rough forms for the sipper bottle. One form in particular, (highlighted on the left), caught the design team’s attention as its ‘animated rings’ reflected ‘motion/performance’ element to a great extent. Bottle grip was another design element that could provide the right user experience and help in selecting the relevant form. Converting the forms into silhouettes and combining them with human grip sketch, helped choose a form that gave the most ‘energetic’ tactile experience.

Rough Mockup

After creating the CAD model, the engineering drawings were sent to the model maker to create the 1:1 aesthetic prototype with the right pantone color.
